Job Hunting in the Electronic Age
The internet has brought many changes to our lives and has made certain things easier and more convenient. Searching for a job is a case in point. With just a moderate level of computer knowledge you can post your resume on job boards, search for positions in many different locations, and apply for jobs online. In fact, more and more employers are only accepting resumes submitted directly to their websites, or sent via email. Additionally, effective February 6, 2006, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) issued a final rule requiring all Federal contractors and subcontractors to follow certain recordkeeping guidelines when recruiting and tracking internet applicants.
Submitting resumes online is a great timesaver, and more convenient than driving from place to place. However, there are certain guidelines that should be followed. Doing so will increase the chances that your resume will be seen by the appropriate hiring professionals. One of the most important things you should have is a scannable resume. In order to ensure that your resume can be scanned and/or emailed properly, you need to use certain techniques. You will find further information about scannable resumes here.
Since most employers will contact you via email you should have an email address. You should have an email address specifically for job hunting purposes. It should be professional and consist of either your full name: MarySmith@domain.com or first initial and last name: MSmith@domain.com. While you may think a catchy email (e.g. ilovetodance@domain.com) will show your creative side, it may also cause employers to question your professional judgment. A resume is not the appropriate place for quirky email addresses. Also, you should use a free email service such as yahoo or hotmail. Many times employer and military firewalls block incoming emails. If this happens you will never know a current employer is trying to reach you, and the employer may think you are ignoring their email.
A few last resume tips:
- Do not put any personal information such as social security number, height, weight, age, or picture on your resume.
- Make sure your name, dress, and contact information are displayed at the top of the page. Your name can be centered or justified to the left.
