Resumes now have to meet two criteria: how does it appeal
to the human eye and is it scannable. Following are some strategies
for preparing a scannable resume.
- Use Keywords to define your skills, experience
and educational background that describe specific skills
and you may want to consider including a "Skills or
Qualifications Summary"
- Keywords can and should be incorporated
into the body of your resume.
- Use general abbreviations and industry
jargon or acronyms, but also spell out for the human
reader if it is not well known.
- Increase list of Keywords by including
specifics (e.g., names of specific software applications
rather than saying Computer Proficiency)
- Include interpersonal traits in summary
(e.g., well organized, leader, etc.)
- Use standard, nondescript typeface, preferably
Times New Roman, or Courier
- Use Bold and/or all CAPITAL
LETTERS for headings sparingly.
- Avoid italics, underlining, vertical
and horizontal lines, or shading.
- Place your name at the top of your resume
on its own line; use standard address format below the name
and list each phone number on its own line.
- Use white or light colored, standard size
resume paper.
- Do not fold or staple your resume
