The weather is warming, the
grass is growing and spring is in the air. If
you are frustrated by an ongoing job search, maybe
it’s time to do some spring cleaning!
If you feel like you are going
to interview after interview without an offer,
or sending in resume after resume without any
calls, why not try something new? Whether it is
cleaning up your resume or updating your interview
skills, a fresh approach might get you fresh results.
Here are some questions and
tools to bring a fresh perspective to your job
search this spring:
Rethink your resume:
- What are some new ways you can describe your
job history? To get some ideas, try looking
through a dictionary or thesaurus, or flipping
through a magazine for new words and phrases
that catch your attention. Then add them to
your resume. Be creative!
- What are the strengths you bring to a new
job? Go through your resume and highlight the
“Top 10 Reasons I Am Great for This Job”.
If you don’t have 10 things in the resume,
add to it! Then create a new one-page version
of your resume based on your top 10 list.
- What is your ideal job? Write a job description
for the perfect job for you. Then write a resume
that shows you are the perfect fit for the job.
What happens when you use this new resume?
Try new interview techniques:
- How can you show your interest in the company?
Come up with 3 new and different questions that
you will ask in your next interview, so you
can find out more about the culture of the company
or department.
- How can you calm your nerves during an interview?
Pause and take a deep breath before responding
to a question in your next interview. That gives
you another moment to reflect on the question,
and the extra oxygen helps you to relax. You
can practice this with friends first to see
how it can work for you. Get support to get
unstuck:
- Talk with a career coach! A trained coach
works with people to find a fresh perspective.
If you want new results, you need to take new
actions. Sometimes in order to see what new
actions are possible, you need to see from a
new perspective.
- Most coaches offer an introductory session
to try out coaching for free. If you’d
like to learn more about how coaching might
work for you, send an email to coach@clearedjobs.net
to request information or to schedule a free
intro to coaching session.
