How will you verify my security clearance?

The online questionnaire asks if you have a security clearance and it asks for the level of security clearance, but nothing more specific. The security clearance that you hold should be indicated on your resume and following the initial interview the employers will verify your security clearance As long as your security clearance is active or current, you are invited to attend the Cleared Job Fair. Just bring copies of resumes to pass along to the facility cleared employers. For more information click here: Cleared Job Fair.

I know your website states that only security cleared applicants can attend your Cleared Job Fairs. I have a security clearance. However, I would like to bring my co-worker, who does not currently have a security clearance, but they are under investigation for one. Will I be able to bring them along?

The facility cleared employers who attend our Cleared Job Fairs are only interested in people with current or active security clearances. If your friend has an interim security clearance they can attend the Cleared Job Fair. Unfortunately, if they are still in the adjudication process, they will not be able to attend.

I’d like job fair notices restricted to the state in which I live.

We do not restrict our Cleared Job Fair notices to specific areas. The reason for this is twofold. Security cleared personnel in other parts of the country travel to this area to attend the Cleared Job Fairs. Also, even though someone cannot attend the Cleared Job Fair they are still eligible to register for the Cleared Job Fair and upload their resume. All resumes that are uploaded are placed on a CD, and as a courtesy to security cleared professionals, are mailed to all facility cleared employers who attend the Cleared Job Fair. Our facility cleared employers are national and global so there are available security cleared positions all over the country and in various parts of the world.

We hope this helps explain why we send Cleared Job Fair notices to security cleared professionals regardless of their place of residence.

Security Clearances

I have an interim security clearance. Can I attend your Cleared Job Fairs or register on your website?

Yes, security cleared professionals with interim security clearances, can attend our Cleared Job Fairs as well as register on our website. For further information please contact ClearedJobs.Net Customer Service.

Prior to attending a Cleared Job Fair, how can I check the status of my security clearance?

The person best able to answer this question is the Facilities Security Officer (FSO) at your current or most recent place of employment. You might want to check the FAQ on the website of the Office of Personnel Management, which is the office that carries out the security clearance investigations. The Defense Security Services site also has a helpful FAQ.

Do I need a security clearance just to attend the Cleared Job Fair? I do not have a security clearance at this time. However I believe that I have some critical skills and experiences that might be of interest to your employers.

In order to be eligible to attend our Cleared Job Fairs you must have a current or active security clearance. There are two ways to obtain a security clearance: you must be sponsored by a facility cleared employer or be a member of the U.S. military. For further information on security clearances please see our Security FAQ.

I see some references to security clearances that I’m unfamiliar with. How are they different from what I currently have?

Each government agency has certain security clearances specific to that agency and the information they work with. These security clearances may, or may not be transferable. The security clearances required are listed in the job posting.

For further information you can check out the following links: Security FAQ and Wikipedia U.S. security clearance terms.

If you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact ClearedJobs.Net Customer Service.

What is the difference between security clearance levels in terms of yearly salary?

The amount of yearly salary an employee receives is really an individual issue. Each facility cleared employer has their own set of standards and the contract limits that they can pay employees who are particular government contracts. Many things are included when salaries are determined. Skill set is a big determinant. In other words, what one facility cleared employer may pay for a certain security clearance level may not be what another facility cleared employer would pay. A "lower" security clearance level combined with a much sought after skill set may bring a higher salary. As stated earlier, this will vary by company and by individual.

I do not have a security clearance. Can I still take advantage of your cleared services?

ClearedJobs.Net’s focus is to work only with security cleared professionals who hold an active or current U.S. security clearance. However, your question is very common and we are happy to try to provide you with some direction on how to go about obtaining a security clearance.

Typically there are two ways to get a security clearance: through military service or by being sponsored by a defense contractor. The defense contractors typically post jobs that contain wording such as “U.S. Citizenship required” or “willing to have clearance processed”.

You will typically find these jobs posted on sites such as Monster.com and Hotjobs.com. Also Defense Contractors have many positions to fill which are important but do not require a security clearance. Some useful links for you to look at are listed below:

What is the process for applying for a security clearance? Is there a website to start the process or is there a physical address that you must go to, to apply?

An individual must be sponsored by a government agency or a contractor before the security clearance process is started. Following this the first step in applying for a security clearance is filling the many forms you must complete such as release forms, fingerprint cards, and an online application called an Electronic Personnel Security Questionnaire, e-QIP. The first place to start would be to go to the website of the Office of Personnel Management which is the current agency overseeing the security clearance process. You can also find information on the websites of the Joint Personnel Adjudication System (JPAS) and the Defense Security Service (DSS). ClearedJobs.Net also has a Security FAQ which will help answer some of your questions. The Facility Security Officer (FSO) at your place of employment is the person who will know what you will need to fill out and where it needs to be sent. You should work closely with the FSO during the security clearance process.

The company that sponsored my security clearance offered me a contract, which I do not want to accept. Since they sponsored my clearance, do I have to accept the contract?

We cannot advise you in this matter because we do not know the specifics of your employment contract. You will need to work with your facility security officer (FSO), on this matter and see if there is another contract you can work on or to learn more about your options. You may also want to check with your facility cleared employer’s human resources department. Some of these issues may have been addressed in your employment letter. Finally, you may want to check with the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

Military Transition

I have twelve more months of military duty. When should I start my job search?

It’s really never too early to start your career search. You can begin by building a network of contacts. Attending our Cleared Job Fairs is an excellent way to network and practice selling your skills. As for applying for jobs, the rule of thumb is when you’re 3 to 6 months from transition, you should begin to apply. ClearedJobs.Net has a Military Transition Manager on staff to help answer your questions.

Are defense contractors interested in hiring former military personnel?

Yes, absolutely. The training, experience, and security clearance status that former military personnel will bring to a position is very important to defense contractors. Also, many former military personnel are employed by defense contractors. They understand your situation and can be of help to you once you are employed.

Now that I’m leaving the military I will need a resume. How do I create one?

Talk to your friends and family members who already have resumes, They can help you develop yours. You should always have two resumes; one general and one targeting a particular job that you are interested in. The first step would be to have a look at the Industry News page on ClearedJobs.Net where you will find helpful tips on writing resumes, scan able resumes and other tips to assist you in your career search. There are other websites that can also provide you with other useful information, such as ACAP.com and About.com. Also you are encouraged to attend the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) classes offered by the TAP/ACAP offices. They will help you with all phases of your career search.

I’m currently stationed in the Washington DC area but when I transition out in a few months I want to move back to my home town in another state. Can ClearedJobs.Net still help me?

The jobs posted on ClearedJobs.Net are not just in the DC metro area. ClearedJobs.Net facility cleared employers have positions available throughout the United States and in other parts of the world. I’m transitioning out in about six months. I have no idea if my clearance will expire before then. I know it is up for renewal but I don’t know what is happening with it.

Please make sure you check with your security officer to find out the status of your clearance before you go on terminal leave. It is much harder to get this information once you are out. If your clearance is renewed, once you leave the military it is considered “current” for 24 consecutive months. Once the 24 months is up, if you are not using your clearance, it will expire. For further information please contact ClearedJobs.Net’s Military Transition Manager.
